Workbook: Planning for Change: Mapping Strategies, Outcomes & Impact Across the SEM
Webinar Description
The Social Ecological Model (SEM) is a foundational tool in public health and violence prevention. New and seasoned preventionists are told to implement comprehensive strategies across SEM levels—but not always shown how to connect those strategies across one project or program, so they can build on one another to drive long-term impact. This session invites participants to re-envision the SEM through a holistic lens—one that centers power, questions dominant narratives, and reimagines what prevention can look like when strategies are connected across the ecology. Together, we’ll explore how to move beyond fragmented, individual-focused efforts toward strategic alignment across the ecology. Participants will engage with a real-world example and will receive a tool to reflect on their own practice, and consider how prevention strategies can be more sustainable, impactful, and responsive to the broader social conditions that shape health, safety, and equity.
Objectives:
1. Describe the narrative structure and implications of the Social Ecological Model in the context of the public health approach to violence prevention.
2. Re(en)vision what constitutes effective practice through a “backwards design” approach.
3. Map prevention strategies & their intended impacts across the SEM using a tool that will be provided.
Evaluation:
